Expedition 2005

Objectives:

Next summer’s investigation will gather information on acoustic, electrical and electromagnetic influences of the narwhal tusk. A new prototype of tusk sensor will be proposed with modifications of a logging unit to accommodate for several field conditions and situations. Additional sound recording and EEG work will be completed. Cryogenic tissue collection will also be attempted with a new protocol to insure success.

Preparations:

A new method of sound recording has already been devised that will permit recording for every whale investigated and permit multiple experiments to be conducted by one person during each event. As multiple studies are planned to maximize the amount of information gathered for each whale, new systems are being refined to allow minimal field preparation and set-up.

Observations:

It is hoped, particularly with the EEG studies, that there may be a method to determine if sensory information to the tusk is associated with brain activity. Additional studies in a more controlled environment will help determine if and how this is best achieved. As was evident in this past field season, there are unusual experiences that may be observed in which it will be crucial to be actively collecting data concurrently.
